HSK or Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi is the globally recognised Chinese Proficiency Test that can be used as solid evidence of your Mandarin proficiency. It consists of six levels, ranging from beginner to advanced. Each level assesses your reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.
1. The Toddler (HSK 1)
Able to use very basic phrases in daily routine such as introducing themselves and asking personal details (address, family members and what they have)
Able to interact slowly with provided guidance & conduct day-to-day communication
2. The Kindergartener (HSK 2)
Able to communicate and understand expressions that are frequently used in daily life. For example, very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography and employment.
Able to express and share their simple opinions
Can describe their background and matter of immediate needs in simple terms
3. The Elementary Schoolers (HSK 3 )
Able to communicate in daily life, study and work
Able to communicate with locals while travelling in Mandarin-speaking country such as China
Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters
4. The high-schoolers (HSK 4)
Able to understand the main ideas of complex Mandarin text on both concrete and abstract topic, include technical discussions in their field of specialization
Can communicate with native Mandarin speakers in common situations
5. The Undergrads (HSK 5)
Can comprehend longer texts (newspapers, magazines, film and TV) and understand implicit meaning
Able to express themselves fluently and write article/short story in Mandarin
6. The Teacher (HSK 6)
Able to summarise information from different spoken and written sources in Mandarin
Able to construct arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation
Can express themselves fluently and spontaneously
Eligible to teach the Mandarin language
